I have a myspace account and on it I have added my favoritist singer of all time, Ani Difranco. She is now my friend (I choose not to listen to those who tell me it's not actually her but a fanatical fan such as myself with a little more time on their hands than I do to create a myspace site devoted to Ani's awesomeness).
I saw a blog post tonight that had me giddy like a little school girl. As I staired at the black and white print beckoning me to buy tickets to her upcoming Austin show in September, I flashbacked to days of yore.
My first Ani show was while I lived in New Orleans. I attended Loyola University off of St. Charles Ave. for my freshman year. (That was a crazy ride. I should blog about that experience someday) Now, it just so happened that my best friend, at the time, also attended Loyola. Long story short (too late) she acquired some Ani Difranco tickets to be held at the House of Blues. I didn't know Her Rockness too intimately at this time but tagged along with my friends.
Needless to say, she blew me away. I had heard a few songs from her CD but nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can compare to Her Rocknesses live.
A few months later, I met my husband (not yet husband but a cute guy I knew) and we attended Jazz Fest, which is an annual Jazz and Rock concert in New Orleans. Low and Behold, who should my wandering eyes spy but Ani, in all her rocked out glory. I stayed, despite the glare of the sun off the bald guy in front of me, and rocked back and forth to her tales of justified "girl power" and how messed up the world could be.
Several more months past when my boyfriend's (who later became my husband, gosh keep up) sister came into town and it just so happened that Ani was playing at Tulaine. What did I do? You got it! I bought tickets and we all headed over (literally "over" since Tulaine is right next to Loyola) for my 3rd Ani experience. Did 3 times make a charm?...you betcha!
The fourth time was during our chapter in Nashville and it was, once again, at an outdoor event. This time, I could now let the newest addition to our family (Neo) in on mommy's secret...Ani Difranco. We all rocked out while sitting on a hill, wind blowing through our hair. It was glorious!!
Alas, many many moons have passed since that last encounter and I pondered over the right words to convince my husband that Ani deserved a 5th round. I calmly (but jumping inside) walked over to the couch where my husband was sitting and stated that I knew he loved me ;) and that since I was approaching 30, I knew he would be wondering what to get me for my birthday and that even though my birthday is in December I would accept this gift as my present. He squirmed in his seat, no doubt wondering what I was up to and how much it would cost him, when I blurted out that Stubb's was hosting Ani Difranco in September. He cooly said, "It's a deal"!!!
So there you have it. My 5th round of Ani!! I'll have to take some pics and post it up after the rock out session. If you don't know who Ani is then watch some of her shows online, buy a CD, do whatever you have to do to find out. Your life will never be the same.
My point is: What do you do when Ani Difranco comes to your city? Drop everything and go. Duh. It's Ani Difranco.

I honestly hadn't heard of Ani Difranco until she was in Mothering Magazine, now I see stuff about her everywhere. Her voice is amazing. Have fun at the show!
